Sexy Is Ugly: A great poem by Praxede Huambo
I came across this young poet, Praxede Huambo at the Groit Nights, a monthly celebration of words and sounds, poetry and storytelling at IYA, Buea and I fell in love with her poem, “Ugly Is Sexy” almost immediately she performed it.
I was intrigued by the way she delivered her deep and powerful words to an interestingly youthful crowd – who paid so much attention till she offered the last word. I asked her after the show, “is sexy really ugly?” and she said, “Well, it all depends on the way you look at it.”
Great stuff, I then begged her to send it over to me so I could share it on my column, “Joan on Sex” because I also wanted my readers to enjoy a young creative and matured mind… just like I did.
It was a promise and I am delivering. So, yea, thank me later…
It’s ugly if that’s all you see.Yes! It’s a body, beyond which there is personality,a mind, full of new ideas, a soul hungry for adventure, new horizons, tastes, languages, people, cultures. If all you care about is your libido,It’s uglyPicturing me in your bed when u have hardly said hello,While I’m standing before you trying to share a bit of my soul, a little more than what I think I really own. Those things you can’t see, you can’t touch. Just feel. It’s ugly when you fail to look beyond the curves, pretty face, maybe a little make-up.When u miss the fact we could be cool without me being your boo, just a friend. Someone you could talk to.Sexy is ugly if it’s all you see.You just may never see me. I mean the real me, who thinks sexy could be the messy hair, the large dress and the really broad smileYou just may never know me, who knows she’s pretty but feels ugly each time u call her “sexy“It’s ugly if you can’t see me.
