Cameroonian female artists taking the lead in 2020

Cameroonian female artists are taking the lead in 202o to drop not just good music but also pushing the envelope on bringing quality videos to their fans.

Blanche Bailly, Mihney, Daphne, Rinyu, Reniss and Briana Lesley are leading the band of musicians in this country to portray consistency, quality and style in what they are putting out, whether in collaboration with other artists or in solo projects.

Yana Max Jr., co-host on Freaky Table once said, “Artists do not make music for us, they make music for themselves,” but going by the latest works from these three female music stars, it’s hard for one to totally agree.

Blanche Bailly is pregnant but before that announcement, she worked with singer, Neglect Buri on their new Afro Pop song, ‘Depenser’ and she nailed it! Her vocals, fashion, attitude and general delivery on the song and video was on point! She was on fire! Her look was fresh, modern and trendy and she did well hiding that growing baby bump underneath her beautiful nude coloured oversize sequin blazer as well as her pink fur mini shirt and jacket.

Rapper Mihney‘s ‘Marionette’ video is giving us a Michael Jackson Ghost’/ Nicky Minaj ‘Moment 4 Life’ vibe. The Dr. Nkeng Stephens directed video was vibrant, contemporary and super street fashion. Given the fact that the Game industry leads as the highest earner in media, the femcee went comic and animation with some scenes, looking like a dull with huge sorry eyes rocking house help aprons. As for the song, she went with Phillbill Beatz who delivers an Afro-Dancehall beat for today’s listening pleasure. The song is danceable and the  video is good to watch again and again.

Briana Lesley is making a strong comeback with story telling in her latest song ‘Like Me’ featuring Dready Christ, and it’s beautiful to listen. Her voice soars through the Payne Nkeng produced beat giving us a magical blend of Simi and Rinyu. Dready Christ on the other hand, delivers his unique style, reminding us why he was tapped by Mic Monsta on ‘Change Ya Style’. The love song talks hope and trusts and believe that a couple could pull through only if they are ready to put in work, love, understanding and trust into their relationship. Video director, Telesphore Lontsi tells us a simple but good story as he made use of reality and environment to depict what love looks like in the ‘bronx’.

Back in April, Stevens Music superstar Daphne released her song with the legendary Koffi Olomide title, ‘You Got It (Coller Serrer )’ and let’s just say the video also became famous.  As usual, the singer’s voice and looks did all the magic. The video, co directed by Dr Nkeng Stephens, showed a more subtle yet sexy side of Daphne. However this wasn’t as playful her song/video, ‘Ololoyi’ with Abztrumental or as dramatic as ‘Reviens Mois’ with Ful. All these works stand her out for her consistency, delivery and ability to wake other musicians from slumber.

Akumba Music star girl,  Rinyu takes the shine as perhaps the biggest revelation in 2020 with her music. He fusion on Zouk and Afrobeat leaves one with an inexplicable emotional feeling. She can sing and she did that with her June 2020 song, ‘Dreamy Eyes’. The sound is modern, fresh and cool for whatsoever occasion. A fan tells us, “Rinyu sings for the future.” We can’t seem to disagree. The video is simple, clean and relatable.

Of course, Reniss takes the shine this year with her second studio album, ‘NZO’. An essential body of work necessary for the Cameroonian music industry. Her producer and label owner, Jovi Le Monstre did a remarkable job on the production side dishing out a mix of likable pieces of Rumba, Makossa, Bikutsi and Pop within the album.
