Cameroonian ‘Golden Movie Awards’ nominees abandoned in Douala

The Golden Movie Awards is an annual award that celebrates outstanding achievement in African television, digital media and film industries. Administered by the expert in cinema and television, the award recognizes film excellence in 30 categories for an international appeal. The inaugural edition was held on June, 27, 2015 at the State Banquet Hall in Ghana.

With nearly 30 categories at this year’s GMA, five outstanding Cameroonian movies showed great screenplay, top notch production and great acting skills. These films have continued to make impact both home and abroad and its no doubt they landed on  the list of films that qualified for the final stage of the process of nominations.

Nkanya Nkwai‘s ‘A Good Time To Divorce’ bagged 11 nominations followed by Musing Derick‘s ‘Tenacity‘ with 7 nominations. Both films were no doubt the highest nominated films for this year’s movie event but both directors were left out of the event due to logistical and/or poor communication issues.

We were told that the organizers were in communication with the Cameroonian delegation for weeks until towards the event date when they seemed to have vanished. Emails on the scheduling had been sent and the team was assured that their accomodation and flights were been taken care of by the GMAA2018 team. A fan even commented on our post on Facebook, June 2 confirming our report.

Well, apparently something went wrong at the last minute! Because Nkanya posted on Facebook early June 2, telling his fans he was on his way to the Douala International airport to board for Ghana but until 9:00 PM that same day, he was still in Douala. No member of the GMAA2018 team had called about their flight, if it had been cancelled or not.

Both Musing Derick and Nkanya Nkwai finally didn’t attend the ceremony because the organizers couldn’t afford their tickets. An insider tells us they opted to take care of their accomodation only, but this was only disclosed a day before or the same day of the event.

No one says they organizers were obliged to bring forth their highest International nominees to Ghana but that information should have been communicated to the Cameroonian team long enough for them to choose to attend on their own expenses or not.

However, actor and nominee, Alenne Menget saved the day and made it to Accra on his own and was able to collect all six gongs for ‘A Good Time To Divorce’ movie, which was excellent.

Once again, congratulations to #teamcameroon for their huge win Saturday night but the GMAA organizers need better communication skills when next they are planning on getting foreigners to attend their movie event. Do not disrespect our movie stars all in the name of an award.
