Wax Dey becomes UNHCR LuQuLuQu ambassador

Cameroonian singer, Wax Dey has been appointed one of United Nations LuQuLuQu Tribe ambassadors in Africa.

This was revealed in an Instagram post by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on November 23 welcoming the singer to an elite group of United Nations High Level influencers in Africa. Wax joins Nigeria’s 2Baba, South Africa’s Goliath and Ghana’s Stonebwoy as some of Africa’s UNHCR ambassadors.

The LuQuLuQu campaign is a collaborative effort by the UN Refugee Agency and prominent African personalities and companies to promote the principles and values of sharing responsibility for one another, and sharing resources, in support of the displaced people in Africa.

“The idea of coming together as a collective and changing the narrative of Africa’s displaced is a new approach. The assumption was that for Africans, there is no expected action beyond hospitality. So to have this immeasurable outpouring of love, time and donations is truly historic,” Ioli Kimyaci, UNHCR’s Representative in Ghana explains.

There’s no doubt that the plight of African refugees has been brought into international spotlight once more by the recent exposition of slavery and slave trade practices that migrants are subjected to in Libya, while trying to search for better lives overseas.

This is not the first humanitarian campaign Wax Dey is getting involved with. The “Better” hit maker founded the Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Week in South Africa which has  now become an annual event of the Government’s calendar.

He also got involved with U2 Bono‘s ONE Campaign back in 2013  which he helped establish across Africa. He was part of the team which brought together 19 artists to perform the hit song ‘Cocoa Na Chocolate’ led by Nigerian singer, D’banj to promote Agriculture among young people in Africa.

The campaign which pulled over 2 million Africans (mostly from Nigeria) to call on African leaders to increase investments in the agricultural sector. In 2015, he also initiated and co-produced the song ‘Strong Girl’, led by Nigerian singers, WajeYemi Alade and Nollywood star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde . The project reportedly rallied over 1.5 million Africans to sign a petition pushing African leaders to empower women for better economic participation.

According to 237showbiz.com, Wax Dey has also served as a brand ambassador for the ONE Movement (an international anti-racism/xenophobia initiative championed by the United Nations), and Brand Ambassador for the City of Johannesburg, helping the city in a global campaign to manage its reputation that came under threat with xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Congratulations Wax Dey.
