The Cameroon entertainment industry has been hit by a ‘killer bill’ from the Ministry of Arts and Culture and now, celebrities are reacting on social media.
The Cameroon Ministry of Arts and Culture (MINAC) has passed into law a bill which literally states that all entertainment companies in the country will have to pay a registration fee to the ministry in order to function and survive in the country.
According to the newly passed decree, entertainment enterprises, including music record labels, cultural singing and dance groups, film and TV production houses, fashion and modeling agencies etc, will pay the sums of 25, 000 cfa to 600,000 cfa to MINAC, renewable every after 10 years. Despite these payments, these same companies will still continue to pay their regular taxes to the government. (See document)
Cameroon celebrities have now taken to social media condemning the new bill, calling it a “Killer Bill”. Singers like Magasco, Tzy Panchak and rappers, Maahlox and Pit Baccardi and some media personalities have all been very vocal with their disgust about the newly signed decree; saying it’s a complete exploitation of an [entertainment] industry which has never been supported by the same ministry.
